Lune & Wyre Bursary
The Lune and Wyre Bursary was set up in 1994 with £5000 and the interest gained has been available to support the travel costs of undergraduates and MSc students who are carrying out project work on the local rivers and tributaries.
Some 15 projects have been completed to date ranging from studies of invertebrates, water quality, spawning gravel suitability, and ecology. We continue to try to ascertain why the runs of sea trout and salmon are declining. If there is poor survival of deposited eggs there will be less returning adults. Some people claim it is all down to problems on the high seas. We are fortunate to have a river so near to the University with counters and a trap and supply of eggs to assist further research. We are engaged in studying salmon egg survival in the presence of fluctuating pH and are also concerned about the effects of agricultural pollution.
Projects in these fields would be welcomed. Please refer to the applications page
